Kapitel 1

I thought it was interesting when I was reading to draw parallels between German culture and the German language.  Katy mentioned in class that the German language is more welcome to outside words than a language such as French, which is why there are German words like “orange” and “ipod.”  I think that this phenomenon could also extend to culture, which is why German culture in America is less of a sub-culture and more mainstream—it is more willing to adapt and incorporate other influences that other cultures might be.
In turn, I feel Americans are more welcoming to cultures that are willing to adapt than those that are not, which is another reason why German culture can be seen so clearly in the mainstream.  Americans are similar to Germans in that they pull from other cultures to create their identities, which makes a blend between German and American very natural feeling.
