Kultur 6

I read the article "Come in my door is Always Closed" the title I thought to be sarcastic and it caught my attention. Once I read the article I thought it was pointless to always have the door shut. If Germans always have their door shut then, people always interrupt, unlike in America in which a shut door means come back later. I will also be the person to knock softly and feel like an intruder. It will be very difficult for me to knock hard and walk in without feeling unwelcome. The second article I read was "Worshipping the Garbage Gods" I was really surprise on how strict and specific Germany is about recycling. As I was reading I quickly compared it to the millions of times I thrown away something in the recycling cans doubting whether the item is considered to be recyclable. I would freak if I had to divide my garbage in multiple categories. Although recycling can be confusing at time I think it is great that Germany puts such great effort into keeping the earth safe!

AMD6

Für die AMD6 habe ich die Simpson's gesehen. I watched the episode "Auf diese Lisa können sie Bauen." In the episode Lisa misreads a price tag and buys an expensive Bauen (purse). I was able to pick up multiple vocabulary terms, for example there was a part where the grandpa said "Geld zu geben" and then gives the Simpson's his money. The grandpa also said "Ich habe...Präsident geschrieben, which from chapter five I know means he wrote to the President. Also when Lisa goes to the cash register to the cashier said "fünfhundert dollar." and Lisa becomes frighten for the expensive price and a lady waiting in line says was ist los? which I recognize from a Lola Rennt worksheet. (What is the matter)  I enjoyed watching the clip and I wasn't completely lost which was really cool!

Kultur5

For the Kultur 5 I read the article No Blood No Entschuldigung, If I had gone to Germany before reading this article I would of probably felt very disrespected, and my visit would not been pleasant. Now that I know Germans do not tend to say sorry for a simple bump in the shoulder, when I go to Germany, I will understand that for them a push or any light physical contact is not a good enough reason to say "entschuldigung". I will avoid saying that word, (unless of course I see blood) just so I won't be targeted so easily as a tourist. The second article I read was Flirting with Fräuleins, Hunting for Herren.  I thought this article was really funny I can just imagine a German woman getting offended by a tourist complementing her, or a German man getting overly excited because an American girl sparks a conversation with him. I also thought it was very interesting how flirting changes in different regions of the world. Alike languages, flirting actions can be misinterpreted and misjudge easily.

AMD 5

For my fifth AMD I went to youtube, and since on my free time I look up tutorial videos on how to do hair and makeup. I decided to mix pleasure with work and watch a hair tutorial in German! I typed in Deutsch Haare, and a video titled Wellen mit Glätteisen und Welleisen, which means waves with straightening iron and curling iron. As I was watching the girl said it was chic and sommerlich, which is coincidental since Kapitel fünf talks about weather and sommer is summer, so I am guessing sommerlich is summery. I was able to understand a few terms like Gummiband which I remember Katy said meant rubber band back in kapitel eins. After watching the hair tutorial, I decided to watch a nail tutorial that demonstrates how to do ombre nails schnell (fast) und einfach (simple). Although I do not understand everything at the begining of the video she says "heute" which is today, so I am guessing she says today I'll show you....
From the vocabulary I have learn so far, I was really surprise that I was able to understand a great part of the video, and got very excited. Since the video showed every step as she explained it was easier to relate her actions with words that I know. It was a fun AMD!

Kultur 4

Reading the article made me not want to take a train in Germany, it's crazy how specific you have to be when purchasing a train ticket. I will find it very frustrating to give every detail about my trip. Also how they have different prices for specific stuff is weird. Since Germany has so many specifics in choosing a train ticket I can see myself easily getting lost because of a missed detail or being charged extra for something I didn't want but didn't specify. Although I wasn't fond of the train specifics, I however did like how Germany has wider sidewalks for bikers and how they have the right of way and not the pedestrians. If Ann Arbor had similar rules I wouldn't hesitate to ride my bike to class and of course it would be easier to, because of the wide sidewalks. This article made me want to bike all across Germany.

AMD4

For this blog I watched a fifteen min clip of The Six Servants (Die Sechs Diener). I found it to be very funny because the clip had many of the vocabulary from chapter 4 and I was able to pick some of it up. Since the prince is trying to rescue the princess, he says his the love of her life Leibe meines lebens.  He uses schön to describe the princess. Also the verb kommen mit was used a lot since along the way the prince found friends to accompany him through his journey. Words such as Vater, Bitte, Socke, groß, and many more!

Kultur3

I read the articles "Capping the bottle" "German Fast Food" and "Yo dude what about the Turks?"
The first article surprised me, since drinking is a big part of German culture I figured it was a natural habit that did not cause problems to society, From the reading I learn that isn't quite the situation. Now that I am aware of the consequences of drinking heavily in Germany I agree that regulations should be established. Limits should be set on how much is fine to drink in public, like the occasional beer and what is just unacceptable, and leads to misconduct. I'm not a big fan of American fast food and after reading the second article I doubt I'll be a fan of German food, Fried sausage does not seem appealing to me and neither do vinegar fries. The third article demonstrated the type of Turkish food there is and Germany and how to order it. Turkish food consisted of large amounts of meat and also did not seem something I'd look forward to trying. Well maybe just a Doner.

AMD3

Being that it is October for this blog I chose to base my activity on Oktoberfest. Over the weekend I went to shake and steak and ordered a Oktoberfest burger. It consisted of a beef patty with black forest ham, swiss cheese and tangy mustard all enclosed by a toasted pretzel bun. I've ate german food before, but this burger has been by far the best I've had, specially because of the bun. Apart from eating the burger I also watched you tube videos relating to Oktoberfest. I ran into one called "Das Beer Boot," which is a German/English parody song, with a cool beat and some German vocabulary. I also watched   videos that talked about what you will find if you went to Oktoberfest. Dozens of breweries, variation of food, and large parades. Oktoberfest is now one more reason why I want to go to Germany.

AMD2

For this activity I listened to the German National Anthem. To my surprise I was able to distinguish a lot of terms that I have learn through classes so far. For example The opening starts off as Germany, Germany above all, above all in the world. I recognize the "in der Welt" and learned what über alles, meant. I also was able to grasp Vaterland since I know vater means father vaterland will mean father land. I distinguished what Ihren alten schönen Klang, "their old beautiful chime" since ihr, alt, schön, were all words we have learn in class. In one part it states "Deutsche Frauen" which of course I know it means German women. I liked listening to the anthem it had a fun, marching beat to it and was pretty easy to understand parts of the lyrics.

Kultur 2

As I was reading the article "Have you Gained Weight?" I found it to be funny and quiet different from what my culture is like. I couldn't help but compare and contrast between Mexican culture and German Culture. In my culture people tend to beat around the bush and find out why a person is gaining weight by asking other people or asking questions that might lead the person to admit they've been gaining weight. In Mexico if you were to ask someone directly why they are gaining weight a person would get offended and perceive your comment as rude. Unlike Germany where it is normal for people to be blunt and not get upset over the comments.
In the article "The Germanic Stare Down": Watcha lookin' at Granny? I found it interesting because unlike the first article this one I can relate to my culture. Alike old Germans, old Mexicans feel a sense of watching what occurs in their neighborhood and being alert and positive citizens to their countries. In Mexico, specially in the villages you will see old people peeking out the windows the same way the article described the Germans. Also the Subway scenario is also likely to happen in Mexico since we are known to love gossip, mexicans tend to stare at what others are wearing to later talk or comment and of course gossip.

ADM1

For my first ADM assignment I listened to German music! (musik) I listened to Bakkushan - Baby, Du Siehst Gut Aus. which I know from previous knowledge might mean something like you look good? The band was founded by songwriter Daniel Schmidt, and some of his classmates from Germany's biggest University of musik, "Popakademie BadenWütternberg."

I also listened to Die Prinzen- Millionär
Which is one of Deutchlands top selling pop bands I thought the video was really entertaining and funny. I learn the word "Geld" which they kept repeating and that means money. I also heard the accusative keine.

Kapitel 1

The article explains how German American culture is today. How the German's synchronized into American Society. German Ancestry is the most proclaimed identity in the United states. If we look at America now we can see various examples of German culture such as churches established by the German people and traditions such as Groundhog Day, there are also breweries, beer gardens, and theater groups all over the country.  Alike, Americans accepted the German culture, Germans accepted the English language, German now has a mixture and various similarities between English and German words. Every day German words became mixed with English sounds and words, such as "kindergarten" "fooBball".  The article basically emphasizes the influence both German and American Culture had on one another.
